Hundreds of thousands of Ugandan children, from poverty-stricken homes and many who are orphans of the killer-disease Aids, are without basic primary education. They have little hope for the future and large numbers of children will probably end up in the streets begging, or turn to prostitution as a way out of the poverty-trap.
For them, a primary is literally a chance for survival, a lifeline, where they will get at least one square meal a day and an opportunity to fend for themselves and contribute to their nation's much-needed development. They don't want handouts, they just want a chance to help themselves! That is why your help is needed now. They good news is, that it takes very little of our money to make a real difference in Uganda.
"The future of Uganda, not only in agriculture but in all aspects of life, lies in the education of its children. The achievements of Fields of Life, which I have seen first hand, is nothing short of a miracle! Working closely with highly motivated and caring Ugandans, this small charity has ensured that contributions of people from Ireland is providing real education provision for thousands of desperately needy Ugandan children. These children are incredibly receptive to learning!"
Professor Jimmy Marks, Head of QUB School of Agriculture and Food Science.
"When I saw the building accounts, there was no doubt in my mind that the money is going to the right place. the Fields of Life schools are well built and properly run. The children seem to be getting the best start in life."
Ian Harvey, journalist and broadcaster
Word of Life Primary School
This primary school project is located on the outskirts of Kampala. It is in Lunguja surrounded by the Masanafu and Busega slums. It is a Christian school based on Bible teaching and following the Ugandan Ministry of Education syllabus. It purposes to to produce an enviable and un-questionable high quality standard of education and teach Christian discipline to the children.
The school consists of seven classrooms and toilet block and has an estimated population of 350 children.
I had a vision to build a school in or near each slum in Kampala and welcomed this request to build when it came in.
Arise and Shine Academy
This primary school is located in Pobwok Village, 15 miles from Tororo town. The school was initially operating with three rented classrooms and the rest having classes under trees. There are very few opportunities in this area for schooling.
The major aims and objectives for this school are the promotion of primary education in the area, to encourage and upgrade the standard of the girl child, to provide quality education in the rural area, to have easy access to education for the orphan child, evangelism to the students and the transformation of the social condition of the community.
Nakawuka Full Gospel Church Primary School
This primary school is located near Nakawuka Trading centre thirteen miles from Kampala.
The aims of this school are to promote Christian education, to comfort those children without hope, to promote government policies through education, to spread the gospel, and to adjust the chances of evil acts due to lack of Christian morals among the children.
Truth Primary School, Lira
A school in Lira town was much needed for the many displaced children of Northern Uganda. Despite the UPE system of primary education which is supposed to mean free education for four children per family for all Ugandans, it really does not work out so free. The local school usually introduces other charges for items such as school uniforms, food, development fee etc.
The board of Fields of Life Trust spoke to many local village chairmen decided to help these displaced children from the camps. They cannot afford anything because they have been displaced so Fields of Life built a school for 350 children that is free. The project covers, not only funding the construction of the school but also the running costs of the same for ten years. The donor would welcome assistance in the running costs, which will average out at around £7000/10,000 per year.
Kigina Primary School, Rukungiri
A primary school was needed in this area for 500 children, among of whom many are orphans and have no hope of education unless this school is constructed. The objectives for the school are the same for all the other schools needed and this is an excellent school. As Kennedy and I travelled around various projects proposals some gave you that good feeling. This was one of those places.
St. Stephen's Primary School, Mbalala, Mukono
I visited this school in June also. I found over five hundred children in desperate condition. Many are orphans from the North of Uganda and have settled here. I knew we had to help. The school initially had two good classrooms so Fields of Life funded the construction of another five classrooms and hope to build more in the future.
