Hundreds of thousands of East African children are without basic primary education, and large numbers of them could end up in the streets looking for a way out of the trap of deprivation. For them, an education is literally a chance for survival; a lifeline where they will get an opportunity to contribute to their community and nation's much needed development. They don't want handouts; they just want a chance to help themselves!
The purpose of the Fields of Life Education Programme is to ensure that standards of excellence are monitored and maintained in accordance with Fields of Life core values and beliefs within the schools constructed. It is Fields of Life policy that all schools will be inspected, guided and advised in standards and practices for achieving educational excellence. Fields of Life works under the statutory requirements laid out by the Ministry of Education and the relevant governments in East Africa.
In addition to this Fields of Life aims to contribute to the community-based health education work in rural areas. Many people die every day from preventable diseases and treatable conditions, like malaria. Fields of Life hopes to reduce disease by preventative immunisation, early detection, and health education. Our programme strives to inoculate the children in schools before ill health has a chance to take hold of their lives. A trained nurse from a local clinic travels to the schools to provide the children with screening and inoculation services. Our view is that an unhealthy child will not have a chance to grow, and will not have the ability to learn if suffering from ill health. The future of the programmes is to expand it to other schools.
We could not provide a complete overview of our Education Programme without taking the time to cover the effectiveness of our Child Sponsorship programme. This programme is an opportunity for a sponsor to embark on a relationship with an East African child in a supportive capacity. Your encouragement would bring hope and concretely demonstrate to a child that there are individuals who care about their growth, education and development.
Bernard Masaba, the Fields of Life Education Advisor is responsible for inspecting the schools (constructed by Fields of Life) and is charged with ensuring that the educational standards are maintained at a level that is consistent with FOL expectations. Bernard also conducts workshops and participates in periodic conferences hosted by FOL. He is the eyes and ears within the schools, as he is in the field travelling from one school to the next. Given that by the end of the year Bernard's goal is to assess all of the schools, he indeed has a challenge ahead of him!
