The health unit would be located in Lira, Northern Uganda, three hundred and thirty miles from Kampala. This area has been greatly affected by the war in Northern Uganda, which has left many people homeless and many fleeing to Lira town.
Because of the displaced people the town is crowded with health services stretched to over bearing limits. So many do not have access to HIV tests and other medical facilities.
For most people in Lira they have had little or no education thus the high rates of teenage pregnancies, maternal mortality and malnutrition. The people are in dire need of medical services.
It is this background that Dr Joel Odom and Esther Okullo are compelled to find a way of helping the situation. The main target group will be children and women and people living with HIV / AIDS.
The health unit privides a health facility that meets the basic health needs of the people, emphasising preventive measures and to provide HIV/ AIDS testing and counseling services.
This will help reduce the incidence of HIV / AIDS, the mortality rate and teenage pregnancies and provide proper and standardized health services for the people.
